SPOTLIGHT ON » FRANCO’S PIZZA

Legend has it Franco immigrated from Italy to New York, then meandered his way to Parkersburg, West Virginia, where Franco baked up the idea of Franco’s Pizza, now the “Pizza Place.”

Mike Alexander (pictured right) worked for Franco in
Parkersburg from the age of 16-21 and then went on to become an ironworker for the next 24 years. Neck surgery convinced him to give up ironwork and move back to making pizza.

Franco handed over his Franco’s Pizza Place of Athens to Alexander in March of 2016. Mike and his son Dylan (pictured left) carpool together from Parkersburg to Athens and now bake up an average of 40 pizzas a day. Their pizzas are “authentic New York style pizzas with an Italian recipe” and can be Sicilian Thick or Neapolitan Thin.

To meet the late-night student demands, Franco’s Pizza Place will keep their ovens on and doors open until 3 AM.

When in full operation, Franco’s Pizza Place employs fifteen people.

To learn more about Italian pizza recipes, the ironworking trade, or to order a pizza-pie, call 740-447-9316.
